CMG Landscape Architecture

Architect-led DesignBuild

Office Tenant Improvement
San Francisco, California

An expanded company headquarters for this SF-based landscape architecture firm, using modern design principles to convert an existing building in tune with CMG’s ecological values and artful approach.

With a goal of adaptive re-use in mind, CMG found a compelling existing building in San Francisco’s South-of-Market district to house their expanding staff and offices.

The new interior was designed to be an exceptionally open, flexible and non-hierarchical office environment, in direct relationship to CMG’s company culture. The architecture, detailing, surfaces and materials are simple and neutral, beginning with bead-blasting the original envelope. Perimeter walls remain accessible for project pin-up surfaces and art display—allowing the company’s daily life within to provide character, color and inspiration and to welcome temporary installations and changing needs.

New modern forms were inserted around the perimeter of the space to house functions requiring separation from the whole, including the entry, large conference rooms, and two-person ‘phone booth’ rooms. The entry ‘cube’ opens into a spacious area across the full width of the double-height storefront, with a highly visible meeting area and large kitchen. A new roll-up door in the storefront adds a dynamic element, expanding the office’s capacity for hosting formal and informal corporate functions.
